Testing a Noise Source:

There are 3 major tests for noise sources.

Figure 1 shows a histogram of an actual noise source taken on a digital sampling oscilloscope. As is clearly shown, this test can quickly determine if a noise source is Gaussian or not.

Figure 2 shows a spectrum analyzer plot. Typically amplified noise sources are tested for flatness over frequency with a spectrum analyzer.

Table 1 is an ENR vs Frequency calibration data table as taken on a highly sensitive receiver. The ENR measurements of the noise source under test are compared to a known reference noise source.
